What salt air does to Merewether surfaces

Merewether sits along the coast south of the city centre, close to the beach and the ocean baths, and its homes take the full effect of the sea breeze. Salt settles on paving, render, glass and metal, and it holds moisture against surfaces, which helps mould, lichen and grime to take hold.

Owners usually notice it first as a dull film on walls that face the water, green or black patches on shaded driveways, and tired-looking decks. Cleaning here is partly about appearance and partly about stopping a build-up that shortens the life of paint and sealers.

Steep streets, older cottages and tight blocks

Many Merewether streets run up a hill from the beach, and the houses step with the land. There are Federation cottages, renovated terraces and newer builds on small blocks, often with sandstone retaining walls and narrow side access. Driveways can be steep, which makes them slippery when algae grows.

Hills and tight access matter on the day. Hoses and equipment may need to be carried up stairs, water supply points may be at the street, and neighbouring cars and washing lines can limit where we set up. We ask about all of this before the quote.

Cleaning services we can quote for Merewether

Here is how the five services on this site usually apply near the beach.

Many Merewether owners start with one service and add another once they see the difference.

Not every surface should be treated the same way, and the right method is chosen after looking at what you have.

  • Surface type. Sandstone, painted render, soft timber and concrete each tolerate different pressure and cleaners.
  • Level of growth. Heavy lichen and algae take longer to treat than a light film.
  • Access. Steep sites and stairs add set-up time.
  • Run-off. Wash water needs a plan so it does not simply flow down the street.

We describe these factors in the quote.

We list each of these in the quote, so you can see which parts of the job need the most time.

Older fibro, wash water and planning ahead

Some older Merewether homes have fibro sheeting, which can contain asbestos in houses built before the late 1980s. Fibro and old cement sheet roofs must not be high-pressure washed, and any suspected material should be assessed before cleaning. If you are unsure what your walls are made of, say so and we will not proceed until it is clear.

In NSW, wash water generally should be kept out of stormwater drains. We plan how to contain or divert it, particularly near the beach where drains lead straight to the sea.

If the cottage is heritage listed, check the council rules before cleaning.

Questions about Merewether

Why do my walls near Merewether Beach keep getting a dull film?

Sea spray carries salt that settles on exterior walls, especially those that face the water. It attracts moisture and dust, which dulls paint and render. A gentle soft wash and a freshwater rinse remove most of it. Washing before it builds up is easier on paint, so some owners clean walls on a regular schedule.

Can you pressure wash a sandstone retaining wall?

Sandstone is soft and can be damaged by strong jets, so we use low pressure and cleaners suited to stone, and test a small area first. Old mortar and flaking surfaces need special care. If the wall is heritage listed or fragile, tell us beforehand so we can choose the safest method.

Is it safe to wash a tile roof near the coast?

It can be, with soft washing rather than high pressure. High pressure can lift or crack tiles and push water under them. A low-pressure wash with a suitable cleaner removes moss and algae without that risk. We also protect gutters, downpipes and rainwater tank inlets before starting. We also protect gutters.

What do you do about wash water on a hill?

Slopes make run-off hard to control, so we plan where water will go before starting. That can mean blocking drains, using mats or sumps, and collecting dirty water where needed. Detergents are chosen with the surroundings in mind. If your property drains toward a gully or the beach, mention it. Photos from below help.

How often should I clean a deck close to the ocean?

Salt and sun weather timber quickly, so many owners clean once a year and reseal as needed. How often depends on exposure, shade and the timber. A deck that stays damp grows mould sooner. We can look at yours and suggest an interval that fits. Sealing can follow, and the quote notes it.
