Timber deck half washed, warm brown boards beside grey mouldy boards

Timber decks and fences in Newcastle

Deck pressure washing in Newcastle, NSW

Decks, pergolas and timber fences cleaned of mould, grey weathering and salt film, with the pressure matched to the timber.

  • Low pressure worked along the grain
  • Mould, algae and slippery patches removed
  • Ready for oiling or staining once the timber dries

Step 1 of 3

What needs cleaning?

What does deck pressure washing in Newcastle involve?

Deck pressure washing Newcastle owners ask for is a careful job, because timber is soft. Too much pressure leaves fuzzy, scarred boards that hold more dirt than before. Too little, and the grey film and mould stay put.

We start by sweeping the deck and clearing leaves from between the boards. We then apply a suitable cleaner that lifts mould, algae and weathered grey fibres. We work along the grain at moderate pressure with a wide fan tip, keeping the nozzle at a steady distance so there are no stripes. Finally we rinse the deck and the area around it.

The same method applies to pergolas, steps, balustrades and outdoor furniture frames. Composite and plastic decking can be washed too, but these need their own settings. If a board is rotten or a screw is loose, we will point it out rather than hide it.

What timber and fence types do Newcastle properties have?

Decks and fences around here are made from a few common materials.

  • Hardwood decks. Spotted gum, merbau and similar timbers are dense, but they can bleed tannin and turn silver without maintenance.
  • Treated pine. Softer and more easily marked, so it needs lower pressure.
  • Timber paling and lapped and capped fences. Gather mould on the shaded side and weather unevenly in sun.
  • Colorbond and metal fences. Washed gently with a mild solution to protect the paint.
  • Sandstone retaining walls and steps. Soft stone that needs very low pressure.

Close to the beach and harbour, salt exposure speeds up weathering. Away from the coast, shade and damp are the bigger problem.

Why do decks and fences turn grey, green or slippery?

Sunlight breaks down the surface fibres of timber and turns it grey. Humidity, shade and poor airflow grow mould and algae in the gaps and on the boards. Leaves, potting mix and food spills add organic matter for it to feed on.

Slippery boards are a real safety issue, especially on steps and near pool areas. A wet deck with green growth can be hazardous even for people who know it well.

Washing removes the growth and the dead surface layer, leaving cleaner timber that takes a stain or oil better. It does not repair damage. Splits, rot, rusted fixings and raised screws should be fixed by a carpenter, and we will tell you what we find.

We quote in writing. The factors are the deck area, the number of steps and rails, the timber type and condition, how heavy the mould or weathering is, and how easy the access is. Fences are measured by length and height, and by whether both sides are reachable.

A typical deck is often a half day job, and larger sites with several fences take longer. We will give you a window when we quote.

After cleaning

The timber needs to dry fully before it is oiled or stained, which can take a couple of dry days. Staining or oiling is a separate job, so plan it for once the wood is ready. If you want to bundle other exterior work, see our house washing page.

What should you do before the crew arrives?

Clear furniture, pots, barbecues and toys from the deck and from along the fence line. Trim back plants that touch the timber. Tell us about loose boards, protruding screws and gaps where water could run under the house. Let us know if neighbours share the fence so we can think about their side.

We cover or rinse nearby plants and we check where the wash water will flow. We rinse the area when we finish and we leave the deck clear of residue.

If you would like the paths and paving by the deck done at the same time, see our driveway pressure washing page, or the home page for the full list. Call (02) 5550 8114 or send the short form for a quote.

Questions about pressure washing in Newcastle

Will pressure washing damage my timber deck?

It can if the pressure is too high. Strong water raises the grain and leaves fuzzy, marked boards. We use moderate pressure with a wide tip, work along the grain and test a small area first, especially on softer timber like treated pine.

Can I stain my deck straight after cleaning?

No. The timber needs to dry fully first, which usually takes a couple of dry days, longer in damp weather. Staining wet timber traps moisture and can cause peeling. Check the stain maker's instructions for the right moisture level. Rushing this step is the most common reason a fresh coat fails early.

How often should a deck or fence be cleaned?

Shaded or beachside decks may need cleaning every year. Sunny, open decks can often go longer. A good sign is when the boards look green, feel slippery or have lost their colour. Regular cleaning also makes each job easier. Shaded decks on the south side of a house usually need it most often.

Do you clean composite decking?

Yes. Composite boards can be cleaned, but they need gentler settings and a suitable cleaner. Too much pressure can mark the surface. Tell us the brand if you know it, and we will plan the right method. We also check the board joins first so no water is forced underneath.

What if some of my deck boards are rotten?

Washing will not repair rot, and strong water can make soft boards worse. We will point out any weak boards before we start so you can decide whether to have a carpenter look at them first. Repairs are best done before cleaning and any oiling or staining.
