Pacific Highway traffic, shopping precincts and suburban streets
The Pacific Highway carries heavy traffic through the suburb, and the dust, exhaust film and oil that come with it settle on nearby surfaces. Shopfronts, signage and paving near the main road collect grime faster than streets set back in the residential areas.
In the quieter streets, driveways are usually wide, houses are single-storey or split level, and gardens have trees that drop leaves onto roofs. Many roofs are concrete tile, which holds moss and lichen well, especially on shaded and south-facing slopes. Roads are generally easy to access, so setting up is straightforward.
