What problems do Newcastle driveways and paths have?
Newcastle driveways cop a lot. Salt carried in on the sea breeze leaves a dull film, especially on suburbs close to the beach and the harbour. Humid weather and shade produce green and black mould along the south side of the house and under trees. In wetter months those same patches become slippery.
Common stains we see
- Oil and grease from cars, bins and mowers.
- Tannin stains from gum leaves, figs and fallen fruit.
- Rust marks from metal furniture, or from bore or tank water on some properties.
- Tyre marks and brake dust on the apron and garage floor.
- Algae and moss in expansion joints and along garden edges.
Older concrete is also more porous, so it takes up stains faster. Some surfaces, like sandstone, stencilled concrete and exposed aggregate, need a lighter touch than a plain broom-finish slab.
